Read below the interview with one of the refugee student that has attended the NewTalents4EU training organized by CodeYourFuture!
In the framework of the NewTalents4Eu project, our partner CodeYourFuture has provided ICT courses to migrants and refugees. Read below a short interview that we made to one of the students!
- How did you find out about the CodeYourFuture training?
I heard from a fellow refugee working as a volunteer in an organization that helps refugees.
- For you, what has been the most useful part of the training?
I find every session to be very useful, technical or non-technical; they all add to my knowledge a lot.
- What has been the most interesting part of the training?
There are 2 parts that I find interesting:
- With the technical mindset that I have, I find the homework challenges to be very interesting as they usually require me to research to be able to solve them.
- Personal Development days, as they do ( discuss/ remind / show ) us how soft skills are as important as the technical ones
- What did a typical day of training look like?
The day usually starts with an icebreaker activity at 11:00 AM ( best part of the day 😛 ), then the technical presentations start, with regular breaks (long lunch break) and 2 or 3 exercises (in groups of 3 ~ 5). The day ends at 5:00 PM.
Due to the amount of material and the complexity of some of the concepts, mentors are always giving extra hours through the week to delve deeper on some of the tough concepts and answer the students’ questions.
- How did you manage to balance your life (work, family, etc) with your classes?
I always work on my study at night time after 8:00 PM (that’s when the kids go to bed).
- Did the training have an impact on your professional life? If yes, to what extent?
That’s kind of early to tell as I’m currently unemployed, but I believe that I’m learning first hand from actual developers and that whatever feedback I get from them will certainly be relevant to what’s happening right now in the industry.
